Standoff on #caturday

So, I was sitting on the sofa with my laptop on my lap, with the Gorgeous black cat curled up beside me. My mouse was in one hand, scrolling through Hive posts, and my other hand was occupied giving behind-the-ear scritches to the kitty. Suddenly, we heard a tapping noise at the door and both of us sprang to attention to see what was happening. A squirrel was at the sliding glass door, desperately trying to come inside, tapping at the glass repeatedly.

My black guardian bolted over to the door and also began clawing at the glass from the inside, startling the squirrel. I went to the door and opened it. Suddenly, the squirrel sped away in a gray streak with the streak of a black cat close behind. The squirrel leaped into a nearby tree and was even more startled when the cat began climbing the tree behind him! Fortunately, the cat only climbed two or three feet up before he decided he'd made enough progress to show the squirrel who was boss, and came back down to the ground.

When it realized it was no longer being pursued, the squirrel stopped, turned around, and even came back down the tree a foot or so, staring at the cat, below. Black Cat stayed in his position, starting back up at the squirrel in case it dared to come any closer again. They both stayed like that, frozen in time, for several long minutes. What an exciting morning in the life of a cat, guarding the life and honor of his Caretaker from the brazen rodents!
