Sometimes when I look through my Old Barn Project photos, I am grateful for having gotten them when I did as the structures are no longer standing. That is the case with this barn, photographed several years ago. The field in which it was standing is empty now, although nicely mowed unlike it was in this shot.
Much change has happened to this site over the years. When I found this barn, it was near the road and in front of an abandoned, fire-ravaged, old-style farmhouse situated further-back on the property. So, this barn actually out-lived the house of the property owner. Across the street was a newer house behind some trees, but it is also no longer standing. Only a tiny shed remains to keep watch over the now-sparse goings-on here.

Despite its obvious age, the barn appeared to be in relatively good condition when I found it, although it had obviously fallen out of use. The metal roof was still in good condition and the weathered wood seemed in good shape, too. I certainly hope the wood was repurposed after this building was demolished. The style is so simple, with a drive-bay going all the way through to the other side, and spaces on each side for stables or storage — simplicity at its best!
It is always with a somewhat heavy heart when I find one of my old barns no longer standing, but such is the price of time's marching on.
