Iron Horse

While driving through central Georgia (US) one day, I saw a very large horse sculpture in a field and stopped to make a photo. It was a surprise to see it there, and an amazing piece of art to find in such a rural setting!


For several years, I knew nothing more about this sculpture. However, it is awesome and I thought it was worth sharing. So, I decided to write a very short post about it and share the above photo here on the Steem blockchain. I wanted to mark its location on the SteemitWorldMap as I often do, so I went to both BING Maps and Google Maps to get the latitude and longitude coordinates. I was surprised when I saw the Iron Horse clearly marked in Google Maps, which spurred me to look online for more information about the sculpture. I was glad I did, because the story was easy to find! I wish I'd thought to look it up sooner!

It is called the "Iron Horse" (also known as "Pegasus Without Wings").

The artistic horse was built by sculptor and abstract artist Abbott Pattison and is owned by the University of Georgia. Pattison placed the sculpture on the campus in May of 1954, but it was vandalized and subsequently secured in a warehouse. In 1959, horticulture professor L.C. Curtis retrieved the statue and moved it to his farm. After Mr. Curtis' death, the farm was owned by a descendant of his, who kept the sculpture intact. That descendant passed, and the farm is now named "Iron Horse Plant Sciences Farm" and is used by the University of Georgia for agricultural research.

The sculpture shows clearly in both BING and Google Maps "Street View" and is even marked on Google Maps:
