Euonymus alatus is native to parts of China, Korea, and Japan. It was introduced into North America in the 1860s because of its attractive foliage in autumn. It is considered as an "invasive species" in some areas, though, and has been banned from sales by several states in the US, including Maine, Massachussets, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.
This shrub has been at the end of our driveway as far back as I can remember.
