Burning Bush

In the autumn, the leaves of Euonymus alatus turn such a striking color that it is called "Burning Bush" by many folk in this area. These are photos of the bush at the end of our driveway, next to the street, planted by my father many years ago. During the spring and summer, the leaves are green. In the fall, little red berries form, then the leaves turn a blazing, fiery color.

Euonymus alatus is native to parts of China, Korea, and Japan. It was introduced into North America in the 1860s because of its attractive foliage in autumn. It is considered as an "invasive species" in some areas, though, and has been banned from sales by several states in the US, including Maine, Massachussets, New Hampshire, and Wisconsin.

This shrub has been at the end of our driveway as far back as I can remember.
